CARMEN with OMAYRA AMAYA and the Westfield Symphony Orchestra
Saturday, February21,2009
8:00 pm @The Union County Performing Arts Center
1601 Irving Street,      Rahway, N.J.

“INTENSE...SPLENDID” – The Boston Globe

A VERY SPECIAL EVENT!

The most famous gypsy story ever – retold in spectacular Flamenco dance to Bizet’s beautiful score

The Boston Globe describes New Jersey resident and artist Omayra Amaya as”...mesmerizing, intense, erotic...splendid”. The NY Times says “Ms. Amaya exudes charm and authentic passion...”. The Westfield Symphony Orchestra, in collaboration with TEATRO Sí and Ms. Amaya’s Dance Company will revisit the most famous of all operas, Bizet’s “Carmen” at this historic and beautiful venue. Maestro David Wroe has commissioned Ms. Amaya to design and integrate pure Flamenco choreography (dancers, guitar and singer) and classical Spanish choreography with Bizet’s orchestral music, creating a balanced mix between folk and classical dance, and the symphonic idiom. The result is for “Carmen” to be told through a visual and oral spectacle in an, as yet, unprecedented way.
Amaya’s legacy is one of a deep and proud Flamenco tradition. She is the daughter of Olga and Curro Amaya and grandniece of arguably the greatest Flamenco dancer who ever lived, Carmen Amaya. Ms. Amaya attended the Boston Conservatory where she received a BFA in Dance and Choreography in 1993. As a faculty member of the Boston Conservatory, the Boston Ballet, Harvard University Dance Department and Walnut Hill Performing Arts School, Ms. Amaya also taught at and operated her own dance academy. Omayra was also an integral part of the award winning documentary Queen of the Gypsies, a comprehensive video portrait of Carmen Amaya. In 1999, Omayra co-founded and was co-director of The National Conservatory of Flamenco Arts in Albuquerque, NM. Ms. Amaya was the inspiration for a Spanish documentary by Canal Plus, which features the families of flamenco and was aired in 2000 in Spain. Additionally, Ms. Amaya was joint choreographer for the musical Carmen which premiered at La Jolla Playhouse in 2007, and in that same year she performed at The Lincoln Center Summer Arts Festival in Slow Dancing (world premiere) Motion Portraits of Dancers. Ms. Amaya performs a duet with Steve Martin in the movie The Pink Panther II, which will premiere January 2009.
Do not miss this very special event which also includes a performance by the Westfield Symphony Orchestra of Ravel’s Bolero and Prelude from Capriccio by R. Strauss. Call today for the best seats!
